Paintings

The Momentum Series chronicles emotions of loss, joy, calm, confusion, hope, fear, wonder and anger in the gesture of paint, overlapping shapes and patterns, colour, lines and more. Initiated out of an interest in scaling back the architectural references in her work in exchange for geometric abstraction, Heather Dahl started this series in 2012. The specific references to a place or setting have become less visible within the work, and the idea of memory and feeling about place are mapped out in painting. Shifting space, light, and colour blend on top of geometric shapes illuminating colours and at the same time revealing the shapes that are in the background. An interest in foreground, background, composition and colour are truly at the core of this series.

Selected Architectural Paintings; 2004-2011

Memory is interconnected with place. The building blocks of architecture became an inspiration for the following paintings, painted over several years. Inspired by trips to NYC, Barcelona, London and walking through the industrial parts of Vancouver, these WestCoast cityscapes consider composition, colour, and how the landscape connects to one’s surrounding. Lone buildings or structures become the focal point for remembering a connection with a friend or stranger. Painted from memories, the sites become part of a larger narrative around the stories that take shape as we move through the world around us.
